Blog Entry #5 - Updike and O'Connor

I preferred the story Outage. In the story, you get a taste of real life, in many ways, from technology running our lives, to cheating. But in The life you save may be your own, you just get the moral don’t trust people. I think Updike shows his characters motivations better, because you can tell there is something going on when Brad stops in the subdivision.

  1. I too preferred "Outage," because I think I can understand their motivations better. Although I can see that the mother in "The Life you Save..." is desperate because she realizes she won't always be around to take care of her daughter, as a mother I cannot relate to her basically giving her daughter away. A disabled daughter at that. I also feel uncomfortable with the ending, whereas in "Outage" it's pretty clear what the conclusion is.
