Ned Rorem: The Contentious Union of Music and Literature"A song is a bastard," Ned Rorem said in 1998. "It is uniting two art forms that did not ask to be forced together."
Bob Kaufman: The Enigmatic Beat Poet"Remembrances, essays, and tributes by and about the man credited with coining the term 'beatnik' are scattershot through Beat histories and memoirs."
Sekou Sundiata: Defying Labels"It's damn near impossible to understand what contemporary black poets are doing without understanding what's going on with black music."
Bob Dylan: "I'm a poet, and I know it""Anything I can sing, I call a song. Anything I can't sing, I call a poem."
Yusef Komunyakaa: An Argument Against Simplicity"Song lyrics brought me to the power of words," Komunyakaa said, "the songs taught me to listen."

Blog #20 David Olere Art Gallery

Which piece of art do you view as the most powerful? Explain your answer.
The most powerful one for me was selection for gas chamber. To me watching a child scream for their mother to not be killed, or having a mother watching their child be killed is something you should be sent straight to hell for.

Do you think art depicting the Holocaust makes people more aware of this terrible tragedy? Why or why not?
I think it does, because art is something that people can take in different ways, youre able to see more hurt and more pain

What effect does the art have on a person viewing it for the first time?
Anger, hurt, sympathy

Compare and contrast two pieces of Olere's paintings. Note the similarities and differences.
All of his paintings are to show a horrible event, but in some the people are skinner and bigger.

Blog #19 Holocaust Pictures

When I see pictures of the Holocaust I feel anger, hurt, and sympathy for the people who went through that horrible event. It makes me feel sick to think that people were killed because they were jewish, and didn't look the way that a certain group of people thought they should. The pictures of concentration camps, gas chambers, and death marches are sad enough to make me want to cry; espicially when they are of children.

Blog #18 3 female indian poets

Their lives are reflected heavely in their writings. Arundhati Roy saw something she didn't like in her governement and wrote about it. They all write about their countries and the things that are going on in them. They also write about enpowering women who have been pushed back into the shadows.

Blog #17 Adichie

How did growing up in Nigeria influence Adichie's writings?
Their politics and her life influeinced how she wrote. I also beleive that she writes because writing chose her.

What themes does Adichie address in her writings?
family, religion, politics

Blog #16 Mothers and Daughters

In the selection Girl, the mother is really hard on her daughter to be more than she is. My mom always want me to do my best and be all that I can be, but my mom doesn't talk to me the way her mother did. The mother in the writing kept telling her daughter she would be a slut if she didn't do the things her mother said and i think that was just too demanding, it seemed like she wanted her daughter to be perfect. I know that parents want us to be amazing, but I feel that if a parent is too strict with their child they could end up rebillioning and become a really bad adult. A parent has to be both strict and understanding.

Blog #14 Politacal Cartoons

The very first cartoon that I saw was the first one i wrote on my list and that was the earthquake in haiti. In the cartoon it shows obama is giving money to help rebuild their cities.
Another one of my issues was the health care, and it was also in there with Obama sitting on the floor with all these presents around him except the one he wanted, a health care package.

The carttons are just a funny way of saying things we need to do and don't need to do. it's just a way for people to get a laugh and understnad the problems in america.
my favorite cartoon was Obama and the health care, because even he can't get everything he wants.

Blog #13 poetic imagery

I love how the poem Freeway 280 is with its use of description. The writers uses many good metaphors and other literary devices to creat imagrey. When the author talks about how the highway has hid all of the flowers she says it is a raised scar, like the highway just sat on the flowers and they are trying to push it off. The author also talks about how the highway was suppose to help her get out, but instead it taught her to love beauty.

Blog #12 Food for thought

Think back to a family dinner conversation. Who talks the most? Who talks the least?
My mom normally talks the most and my step dad talks the least

Are there roles that certain family members take on? What are they? Are they constant?
The women in my house are normally the one who cleans and cooks while the men are out side.

How does food stimulate or inhibit the conversation? Give real-life examples to illustrate your view.
I enjoy when I start a good conversation with someone, espically when it's a person who you don't know and you learn a lot from them.

Why would food and poetry go together? What would you like to eat while listening to poetry?
Food can make some people feel peaceful and happy, you can also get emotions out in cookin as you can do in poetry. I would like to eat something soft, nothing that has a lot of chewing.

Name restaurants where Mexican or Latin American food is sold.
Elcominos and Sonias

What kind of atmosphere is implied by the names?
You can tell that it is a mexican restaurant

Have you ever been to a Mexican restaurant where music was played?
No, but i would like to go

Is the atmosphere of Mexican or Latin American restaurants usually formal or informal?
its normally just casual, most people are just laughing and talking and having a good time.

Would you prefer a formal or an informal atmosphere for a poetry reading? Why?
Informal. I feel that poetry should be enjoyed when you are most comfortable, and i am most comfortable in informal clother and atmostphere

Blog #9 Contemporary Issues

Do you think it is fairly common that some mothers create resentment in their children by trying to do things they feel are in their children's best interests?
I do feel like they do. A mother always wants what's best for her child, she wants them to have everything she never did. But I think at times when a child does do better than their mother the mother has some resentment. I don't think they mean to, but they can't help feeling it.

Do you believe people grow up with certain personality traits that can't be changed?
In a way I do, and In a way i don't. Some people can go through something really tragic and come out completely different. But most people don't want to change who they are for anything.
